ROSLINDALE
An accessible, diverse neighborhood for all with a strong sense of community and easy access to green space.
Once known as the “garden suburb of Boston” Roslindale was named for its surrounding landscape when the area seceded from Roxbury and was annexed as a part of Boston in 1873. The word “roslin” was suggested by a local, well-traveled resident who said the area reminded him of Roslin, Scotland which was then combined with the word “dale” as it is surrounded by rolling hills, like a dale. The area known today as Roslindale Village boomed prior to the rise of the shopping mall, serving as a major shopping district for the city of Boston with department stores, food markets, showrooms and a movie theater. Much of its historic architecture remains in place with modern day improvements and establishments in place. The community continues to grow and evolve, yet has a strong history of established residents and businesses at its core.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Proximity to downtown with ample green space, but without the downtown price tags.
A good mix of condos and single family homes with many businesses concentrated in and around the “Village” or the “Square” of streets including Belgrade, Washington, Corinth and South Streets, which border Adams Park. Commuting via the Commuter Rail is only 12 minutes from Roslindale Village to Back Bay Station or the Orange Line at Forest Hills is a quick bus ride away for T commutes.
THE LIFESTYLE
A tight-knit community welcoming to all.
Roslindale is a harmonious melting pot of long standing and newer residents that have a mutual admiration of their beautiful slice of the city. You’ll see children playing outside at Fallon Field all year long - riding sleds down the hill, gliding down the large slide on the playground or playing sports on the field. Events such as tree lightings, easter egg hunts and farmers markets are especially appealing to families and help to bring the community together. The old trolley station on Washington Street has been host to pop up local breweries in recent years. Landmark businesses such as Tony’s Butcher Shop, Fornax Bakery and Delfino’s as well as newer eateries and breweries such as Distraction Brewing Company, Turtle Swamp Brewing, Green T Coffee Shop and Square Root have injected new energy and excitement into the community.
UNEXPECTED APPEAL
Local events, shopping and dining all centered on a quaint village green.
Roslindale is host to arguably one of the best farmers markets in the city and a mix of well established, deep rooted restaurants and specialty shops and hip new coffee shops and breweries. Roslindale Village is home to a village green which plays host to farmers markets, concerts and other gatherings, bringing its residents together and acting as a scenic backdrop for the local eateries and shops.
THE MARKET
A housing market continuing to rise, with many different types of homes to suit every need.
Situated between Jamaica Plain and West Roxbury, parts of Roslindale take on characteristics of the neighboring communities having parts with more single and two family homes on tree-lined streets near West Roxbury and areas with more dense two and three family homes near Jamaica Plain. The housing stock is varied and there is something to offer everyone. As the city of Boston expands, many residents have been drawn to Roslindale seeking more space for less money as compared to some other neighborhoods closer to downtown Boston, and also to enjoy accessibility to green space and a generally quieter environment within a reasonable commuting distance from downtown.
YOU'LL FALL IN LOVE WITH
Small town appeal, city feel.
There are many eateries and businesses in the “Square” that appeal to all ages, giving the business district a small town in the city feel. Hop on the nearby train and you’re downtown in a matter of minutes, or enjoy quiet time in one of the many nearby parks offering acres of green space. With the north end of Roslindale bordering the 265 acre Arnold Arboretum, the George Wright Golf Course towards its south end, Adams Park in the heart of the Village and nearby Franklin Park and Forest Hills there are so many opportunities to connect with neighbors and enjoy the outdoors steps from your front door.
